Silence (Japanese: 沈黙) is a historical novel written in novel style by Japanese author Shusaku Endo. This novel was published in Japanese in 1966 and in English in 1969. It is actually the story of a 17th-century Christian preacher in Japan and the persecution of hidden Christians after the failure of the Shambara Rebellion. The novel, which won the Tanizaki Award in 1966, has been called "Endo's greatest achievement" [1] and has been named the best novel of the 20th century.
